Climate Justice Union is excited to announce our new two part webinar series with Dr Simon Stevens: "Understanding the rising popularity of One Nation and how to respond."

We’re witnessing Pauline Hanson demonise and generate hate and violence towards minorities, and being given platforms to do so. At the same time, One Nation is out-polling the Liberal Party and is competitive with Labor

It is crucial those of us who want a safe, fair and thriving world understand what is driving this apparent rise in popular appeal and how to respond effectively.

Many people in our communities are rightfully distressed right now, by a political class which has continually failed to govern for them.

We need to acknowledge and address the genuine concerns of the many. This means addressing the sources of peoples’ struggles - with financial hardship, housing, healthcare, social isolation and more.

We need an alternative story to tell, to compete with the one being pushed on them by the far-right and their billionaire backers.

A true story.

One which shows that is not our neighbours who cause these daily struggles, but the actions of politicians who prioritise billionaires, big business and tech profits over the interests of our communities.

Of course telling an alternative story is only *one part* of responding.

We also need to be on the ground in community; having hard conversations, providing mutual aid and organising together in response to these real world challenges.

We'll discuss all of this and much more across two sessions.

Understanding the far right may also assist us to pull people in our lives back from the edge.

Join us to explore this topic with Dr Simon Stevens, Lecturer in Historical and Political Studies at Edith Cowan University.

Simon has taught a wide range of subjects, including giving lectures on the far right and fascism. He is a keen photographer of community and political events and he also loves a nice cup of tea in a fancy tea pot and a tasty slice of cake.

Simon was a key part of our successful series earlier in the year on fascism. He dedicates his life to social justice and we are very pleased to collaborate with him again.

Webinars will take place online, 6 - 7.30pm, over two Monday evenings.

We’ll start each session hearing from Simon, then explore what this means for our communities, our work and the work for climate justice. The format of events will include some formal presentation, slides, small group discussion and whole group discussion.

This series is open to CJU members, friends and colleagues.

Collie Community Emergency Shelter - Lessons Learned (10 Aug 2026)

At the end of May 2026 over a long weekend a massive storm hit the South West of WA.

In Collie community members were concerned for the safety of those living rough in the bush or under bridges. They came together to create a 48 hour community managed shelter for those who had nowhere else to go.

What can we learn, what enabled this and where were there challenges? Join us as we ask what can we do as communities to prepare for the next storm / cyclone / fire or major crisis?

Now more than ever those of us working for climate justice and collective solidarity need to be coming together and supporting each other.

Join other CJU members as we share what we are up to, discuss what's important and make connections across our campaigns, organising and work for climate justice.

This is a continuation of our "all in member yarns" sessions, where CJU members come together to share, connect and learn from each other.

We won't be developing shared strategies or alliances, planning big campaigns or critiquing each others work. But we can share what we are up to, ask questions and perhaps highlight new connections and opportunities.

Ultimately we can reflect and remember we aren't alone in this work.

These yarns will be gently facilitated and include whole group yarning, small group chats and text discussion for those who prefer.

The event is open to all CJU members and it is expected that all attendees uphold our CJU principles which can be found here.

All members are welcome, if you have a friend who you think would be up for being a part of the conversation, why not invite them to join up as a CJU member and come along.
